Precision meets craftsmanship – Guaranteed quality from ZEISS and Binder Optik
Lenses are the heart of your glasses. From the first measurement to the final assembly, every ZEISS lens undergoes a precise manufacturing process. Your new spectacles are a high-precision optical instrument created by combining traditional craftsmanship and state-of-the-art technology – for brilliant vision, day after day.
Experience how your ZEISS lenses are created and how your glasses are finished.
From order to production – your lens takes shape
Modern spectacle lens production is a precise, automated process. Once your order has been received, your individual lens is calculated and prepared for production.
A unique barcode accompanies every order through production and ensures that your exact measurements are used at every station. For your lenses, we select prepared semi-finished products (pucks) from stock, the front side of which is already optically finished. With ZEISS free-form technology, the reverse side is processed individually. The lenses then pass through the individual production stations on conveyor belts – until two perfectly fitted lenses are produced.
Blocking & shaping – The path to individual vision
After the calculation, the process begins with blocking: a protective coating is first applied to the glass surface and then the semi-finished product is joined to the so-called “block piece”. This process is necessary in order to be able to clamp and process the glass in the machines.
Shaping is carried out using the latest 5-axis CNC technology. While the front of the ZEISS semi-finished product already contains the basic correction, the back is precisely milled in just 90 seconds. A natural diamond then processes several tens of thousands of points to create your individual free-form surface.
Did you already know? Freeform technology is a modern manufacturing process developed by ZEISS and used under license by the entire industry.
Polishing and marking – quality with ZEISS guarantee
During the polishing process, the lens surface is perfectly smoothed – an important prerequisite for the subsequent coating. Most ZEISS lenses are then given a precise laser signature: an almost invisible “Z”, which is essential for quality control and further processing.
We then gently remove the glass from the block by immersing it in water at a temperature of 50 degrees. In a thorough cleaning process using brushes, special cleaning agents and ultra-pure water, all traces of production are removed and the glass is prepared for coating.
For ZEISS, environmental protection is a matter of course: materials, such as the connecting metal, are processed and reused, and the water required is recycled in an environmentally friendly manner.
Dyeing and finishing – the final touch
We can tint your lenses on request: plastic lenses in an immersion bath with environmentally friendly textile dyes, mineral lenses with vaporized metal oxides. Thanks to years of experience, we can achieve any desired shade with precision.
Did you already know? Most of the people working in the ZEISS dyeing department are women. This is because women have better color vision than men and are therefore able to recognize even slight deviations from the norm extremely well.
The most technically demanding step follows with the coating. For plastic lenses, we start with a special hard coating to prevent scratches. After ultrasonic cleaning, up to nine individual coating layers are applied in vacuum systems. These ensure reflection-free vision, improved durability and a dirt-repellent surface – ideal for clear vision during any activity, from driving to working at a computer screen.
Quality assurance – The final check
Before your lenses leave our premises, they undergo strict quality controls. In addition to the cosmetic visual inspection, we check all important parameters such as diopters, axis, cylinder and design by machine. Once the inspection has been passed, an orientation stamp is applied, which later helps us to precisely incorporate the lenses into the frame.
Only when all quality controls have been passed does the lens receive the ZEISS signature – our quality promise to you. The lenses are then packaged in shatterproof packaging and delivered to our opticians, where we finish your new glasses for you.
Have your initials engraved. For all those who want a unique mark on their spectacle lens: If you wish, you can also have your initials engraved on the lens.
