Who are varifocals suitable for?

At around the age of 40, the first signs of presbyopia often become noticeable and near vision becomes increasingly difficult. Varifocal glasses help to compensate for different distances. The lens is individually configured for your particular needs. This avoids the inconvenience of putting your glasses on and taking them off.

Everyday examples of possible uses for varifocals:

Progressive lenses are particularly advantageous for varied activities when you have to switch frequently between near and distance vision. But also in social situations, as they make it possible to recognize both faces close up and people at a distance.

Progressive lenses can help when working at a computer, as they can focus on the screen at a medium distance as well as things close up.

When watching TV, they can provide a clear view of the screen and, if necessary, of the program guide or nearby controls.

Progressive lenses can also be a great relief when driving, as they help you to make out objects in the distance, but also allow you to see the inside of the car clearly.

They can be a great help, especially for ball sports where different distances have to be taken into account, but also for cycling or typical team sports. Namely, whenever the surroundings need to be detected quickly over different distances.

For whom are varifocals less suitable?

Varifocals are not suitable for activities that have to be carried out overhead, as the resulting visual impression cannot be processed correctly by the brain. This applies to the work of craftsmen, mechanics and pilots, among others. Working with varifocals is just as difficult for technical draughtsmen, designers or other professions that need to see extremely clearly in the side area of the lens. This is mainly due to the fact that progressive lenses can cause slight distortions at the edges. Varifocals are also unsuitable for contact sports with a high risk of injury or when working in bright sunlight, where wearing sunglasses would actually be necessary.
