Single vision lenses

What are single vision lenses?
Single vision lenses have one power over the entire lens. They correct one type of visual defect at a time: short-sightedness, long-sightedness and/or astigmatism.
Single vision lenses for short-sightedness or long-sightedness
If you are short-sighted, i.e. you have good near vision and poor distance vision (left image), you will be given distance glasses with prescription for distance vision.
If you are far-sighted, i.e. you can see well at a distance and poorly at close range (right-hand image), you will be given reading glasses with strength for near vision.

Single vision lenses for astigmatism
Astigmatism usually occurs together with short-sightedness or long-sightedness. With a severe astigmatism, everything appears blurred. This can be corrected by a special cut in the lens (cylindrical lens).
